Today is the last day of my holiday break. I start work again tomorrow, half excited, half traumatized about the prospect of working again after a two week break.
I Made a Mix today, its not that complex, I really miss turntables. It has some songs I really love right now though.

Burial - Ghost Hardware
Bjork - Unison (Ital Tek Remix)

Roots - Dub - Reggae - Dubstep - Future Dub - Rockers
I just finished watching Rockers and had a huge bit of nostalgia for Toronto, dubstep, Thymeless, and generally the Rockers lifestyle. It happens.
I woke up listening to roots reggae, dub, and dubstep, and realize that whole mentality doesn't exist in france. Maybe thats a huge generalization, but there are certain conditions that need to exist for that music to work, and it just isn't a french one. The spirit of Django Reinhardt and the whole gypsy jazz scene is still here though, you can find it in bars. There's something about listening to gypsy jazz that reminds me of bluegrass at the Silver Dollar, and it suits the french culture.
I don't even know how I'd explain dub and reggae culture to a french person. Its something that doesn't really translate. I don't even want to pretend like I'm a reggae rocker like those in Jamaica, but the lifestyle translates at least into something I can respect and understand.
This is mostly a mp3 update for today, my internet at home is broken, my landlord I guess hasn't paid the bill. Its just a selection of future dub, reggae, and dub. Enjoy, they are all well loved songs. Listen to them with big bass, preferably in an echo chamber...
Expect pictures soon, I haven't taken my camera out for a bit, its a little bulky and I never know when I'm out "sight seeing" and when I'm just walking aimlessly.
-----------------------------------
Rhythm and Sound - Jah Version (Burial Remix)
Boxcutter - Windfall
Pinch - Widescreen
White Mice - School Days (Version)
Parson - Throw Some D's
Nanko - Lucky you
Disrupt - Jah Red Gold and Green
Elemental - Sparkle (Boxcutter Remix)

Off Day- Halloween - Transcriptions of Drunken Ramblings
Tonight i'm going to a bar that I regularly drop by. The last time I was there I was in a weird mental state (they happen to all of us). It was halloween and I wasn't doing a Canadian halloween (generally carnavalesque, costumes, performance, a child's holiday where you can play at children). I had left a friends house and set to the streets randomly walking through the Latin quarter a bit drunk, a bit poor, my last 10 euros in my pocket and rent the next day. Well, I spent 3 of it on more beer (two tall cans of 1664) at the nearest corner store. They call them "les arabs," making me cringe at bit at the overt racism in France (which generally doesn't affect me, its much different from American/Canadian racism). Once they were done, stumbling, I found myself at an outdoor rock concert, the music was good, it was free, in front of a major monument. Cool. Well, it turns out it was a catholic rock concert... I discerned from the lyrics after I started translating them. At this point I looked around me to see everyone swaying and holding their crosses close to their hearts. So, like any good atheist confronted with a cultic conglomeration I backed out slowly. Well, I backed into a line, joined it, and ended up in a Baroque church during a midnight sermon. When I tried to balk out slowly, they wouldn't let me leave ("pardon monsieur, mais tu ne peut pas sortir par ici"), entrance only. The exit was at the other end of the church. The place was packed and silent except for the preacher preaching something about the objective forms of happiness as an antidote for suicide and the confesionnals (or something) along the side walls (little alcoves with giant baroque paintings, and men and women kneeling against the knees of priests). The architecture was fucking breathtaking, really, I guess its a relatively special church (even among Parisian churches, which is saying a lot).
After a period of awkward "pardon"s and "excusé moi"s I got out. Anyways, then I went to my regular bar which was relatively close to cool out. I found a chair and used the last of my money on a pint to nurse and write a sloppy sloppy stream of consciousness.
I wish I could show you how sloppy my writing is in my notepad. I'll transcribe some of it into text, don't judge, these are ramblings!
Its been a fucking random night in Paris. I'm only now gathering my sensibilities.
Even before stumbling into that madness, it felt a bit off.
Why? I don't know, maybe thats why i'm putting pen to paper. Maybe if I let the words flow it'll sort itself out.
maybe if I know what i was looking for.
Maybe then I'd find what it was that I want found. maybe I need to stop looking? maybe it should find me.

And the poor in france prowl.

Breath in.

Love,
and its nuances,
in a cheap halfzware-shag.
substitutted
at a bar full of strangers
too fast?
for what?
to love
is to breathe,
breathe in,
the stale aroma
of a stale bar
Timelessly,
I buy my time
with my last beer
with my last money
I nurse,
it gently
for a place to write
to stall
living/leaving.
Too fast?
To love
is to breath,
so i draw again
at the fresh smoke
lit
off the last one
and I whisper
homages, on paper.
To loves lost,
with each exhale.
To die?
Too young
to die.
And the graffiti on the wall
echo my sentiment.
A pale fire at each
breath
A pale blue smoke
at each exhale.
even streams of consciousness
hide clichées lingering in the
corners.
On lonely nights, who hasn't sought sanctuary in a pint, watching patterns in smoke, listening to Siouxie Sue, heavy drums, and the dissonant organs of a dingy bars stereo.
The guy who sits opposite me, takes a moment, he does the same.
Chaotic convalescence, I think whether I should blog this, in my week off from my routine, vacation - vacances.
Fuck that was hard to read, it takes up entirely too many pages in my notebook too, sometimes only two words to a line.
Anyways, after writing that. I'd realized i was relatively sober, feeling much better about everything, that all the "offness" of the day had resolved itself. And I decided to befriend some people at the bar, started with the person across from me, who ended up drinking with me till pretty late (on his tab!). And practiced my french. By the time I was wandering home along the seine I'd practically forgotten my estranged mental state.

Animated much?
I'm an avid fan of all things animated. Honestly, I can't watch enough animation.
I watch all kinds, ranging from hand cut paper silhouettes (ex: "Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed, Die (1926)") to three dimensional computer animation (ex: "Wonderful Days"). I will always be a fan of all things animated I think, and I thought I knew the world of animation relatively well. Anyways, someone pointed me in the direction of the Beltesassar's Animated Shorts Online Festival.
Gasp!
Anyways.
You know all those Utopian blahblah blah, dogmatic, blah blah blah, that people always say about the internet... Well, for me a utopia must have an endless supply of little animated gems. Well, this man is using the internet properly and helping people like us familiarize ourselves with Wikipedia's amazing list of what I could be watching or even to really nerd out and patiently go through with a checklist.
Anyways, they're being seeded full time (which for luddites means eternally availiable). ISOHUNT
TORRENTZ
ALTERATI
You'll need a program like Utorrent to download them. (OSX users need something like Azureus)
-------------------------
Some animation I love:
Osamu Tezuka
These three short animated films were Tezuka first films, this was 1 of the 3 shorts screened alongside the first episode of astro boy.
Male - 1962
Mermaid - 1964
Memory - 1964
----------------------
Ryan Larkin
A Canadian animator who rose to fame for this Oscar nominated psychedelic short animation in 1968. He died this Feburary (2007) from lung cancer, his last years were very hard with very little work, he was mostly drunk and homeless. His memory lives on through his brilliant animation.

Sunday - Market
Well, today was my first adventure into the Market to pick up my produce. Every Sunday at the Bastille, there is a giant fruit, meat, vegetable, whatever, kind of market that opens up for just the day. You might know it from the film "Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse" by Agnès Varda (if you don't know it, I highly recommend it). If I could shop only there, I would. It is just so much cheaper, about half the price of a supermarket for a lot of the produce. There are a lot of things I generally can't find anywhere else.
An entire bag of Jalapeños was 1euro... 4 Avocados for 2euros... etc, etc, etc. Anyways, I'm learning to cook again. It keeps the costs down, and my friends don't seem to mind letting me cook for them. Its a good arrangement. Generally when I put my efforts into something, I like to do it all the time, truely learn it. Cooking all the time I'm guessing is the best way to learn how to cook. That, and they provide the resources (and normally have larger kitchens than mine).

For breakfast, I was decadent. Freshly riding the buzz of bargaining in a bustling market, I set towards the kitchen with delusions of gluttony. I made, artichokes, with a fresh basil, garlic and lemon butter ball at its core (above the heart), shrimps, baguettes, white wine, whole shrimps (with a dijon sauce), and a garlic and chive chevre cheese. Yeah... not too bad for poor.
Anyways, for those of you that only read my blogs for the mp3s, today is a special - mostly electronic - selection, enjoy-

Basic banalities in the morning - Japanese surrealism - and big Mp3 post
Good morning!
Well, its 2PM Here...
So i guess its not really the morning!
What, I slept in, kill me. I've been doing dishes, cleaning, and cooking in my underwear listening to The Zombies. Once I'm done here, I'm going to venture off into the day, I'm hanging out with the Swedes today, maybe watching a movie tonight, maybe seeing some galleries in between. France's galleries are fucking magnificent. There are so many of them, and they all have a free day a week, or a free day a month. I'd love to make a calendar describing each gallery and when they're free. A poor man's guide to french art, or something. If I ever do do it (which sounds a bit too pro-active for someone like me to ever undertake with my lazy/slacker mentality), it'll go up on my blog for future travelers.
I'm peppy today, don't ask why, I've been pretty peppy all week, and peppy isn't a word I use liberally.

Richard Gere is forgivable, there I said it. In this movie, he is excellent. This film is also one of the most beautifully shot pieces of film I have ever seen.

The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp - 1943 - Powell & Pressburger
Find this movie, watch it, fall in love with it. It starts off with quick british patter and a fool of an old man saying absurdly, "But you damn young idiot, War Starts at Midnight!" It ends with the same old man, now the most endearing and warm person imaginable. Deborah Kerr, Roger Livesey and Anton Walbrook all deliver memorable performances. If you're not accustomed to old films, be patient, it'll have you sucked in at about the hour marker.

Too fast to love, too young to die -- mp3 update.
I'm just getting home from the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie which was spectacular. Its free wednesday nights (so is the Louvre) so I took the opportunity to go check it out. I saw one gallery on the first floor briefly that wasn't that impressive. But the second floor was entirely dedicated to Martine Barrat, who, I am now totally mesmerized by. The works were so perfect its hard to put into words. The energy and emotion in her photography was truly breathtaking. There was no moral slant, no pretensions, nothing, the photos spoke for themselves.

These little web images doesn't do her work justice.
This was the only floor I really saw at the gallery. There was a Larry Clark exhibition on the floor above but I was only there a few minutes then the gallery closed. I think its for the best, one artist at a time.

Bonjour Tristesse
I found a beautiful edition of Bonjour Tristesse, I'm not sure if its a first edition, but its old, printed in 54 (which i think is a first ed).
Its beautiful.
I've been looking for it since I got here, digging through used stores with meager hopes of ever finding it. Lo and behold, i find this beautiful copy, old and fragile, the pages hand cut, the first pages not even cut at all.
And its beautiful to read.
François Sagan is beautiful.

So cynical at the age of 18. Her writing so clear, cutting, and sentimental at once. The woman who sold it to mean found a great pleasure in my enthusiasm, she loves the book as well, and it touched her to find someone else who would enjoy it so fully.
----------------------------
Music:
Miles Davis - Feio
Miles Davis and John Coltrane - 'round midnight
Miles Davis and Charlie Parker - Parker's Mood
Pizzicato Five - Ma Vie, L'été de la vie
Battles - Tonto (Four Tet Remix)

Autumn aka Indian Summer.
Its finally starting to feel like the seasons have shifted, of course I'd made the connection that the season was changing before now, but not until today when I opened my window did everything seem so crisp. I need a coffee, thats it, thats all I know. I might actually do something about it if I wasn't so apathetic. Sometimes its nice to be lazy right? Rediculous, right? Especially in Paris. I always regret not seizing the day, running into the sun, wandering helplessly, whatever it is that I feel I should be doing. If I actually do get up early and find myself somewhere in the world outside my apartment, I always appreciate it and remind myself, "see this is why Paris is beautiful."
I missed work on friday, woke up at 5:30, was out of the house by 5:40, but because of the strike, I ended up waiting at my train station till 7:30. Awake, at 7:15 in the morning I had this realization that, it was 7:15 in the morning, and I was downtown in Paris... I spent the next 2 hours in a catatonic state listening to the new Pinch album somewhere along the seine. I watched the sun rise down the river, it's rays bounce off the water, through bridges, between buildings. Somewhere in my haze of sleep depravity and rolling sub-bass ambient flooding through my sound canceling ear buts, the words "wake up paris, i'm watching" repeated. Like I was expecting the city to blossom, unfold to me in a new way, take a new shape.
I don't know what I was waiting for, and I don't know if it ever came to me, waiting for that moment of sublime.
But, at that moment I was a bit closer to the city. I'd seen it go to bed, but this was the first time that I'd stopped to watch it wake up and not been just another busy body commuting.

Nick Drake - a place to be
Que Será Será - Alfred Hitchcock?
Lola Flores - Maria De La O!
Regina Spektor - On the Radio
The Knife - Pass This On
Messer Chups - Vamp Finish
Ron Sexsmith - Secret Heart
Secret Heart
Why so mysterious?
Why so sacred, why so serious?
Maybe you’re just acting tough
Maybe you’re just not man enough
What’s wrong?
Let her in on your secret, heart

A bit absent, sorry!
Well, I haven't updated my blog in a little bit, I'm sorry to my two or three readers.
I'm finally broke.
I don't really know what to write about concerning being broke. Thats it, its no longer me yearning to have disposable income line I did in Toronto, its not about pinching pennies, there are none to pinch. Its nice. I'll make do. I always do.
My school is well located, its surrounded by farmlands. Between teaching I use the time I have waiting to give my next lesson to wander off aimlessly. Something pretty I wrote after my first venture into the fields:
Open fields, I step carefully to keep from crushing snails that line the pathway. Patches of cabbage, between rows of green and black squashes. A wall of dried corn, crisp light brown husks hide bright yellow cobs. A ways behind me, a man walks an excited doberman. I make sure to keep the same pace, to keep the same distance. As nice as it is to meet someone sharing this experience, I don't have the heart to break the silence.
I have to take more pictures. I'm using tomorrow to visit some more graveyards. Starting thursday I'm going to start going to museums.
Tonight I'm settling in and making some mixes. Hopefully, if my internet works, they'll be up before tomorrow morning. But even now, my internet at home is broken, it always is.
I really like Paris.

Arcade Fire - Poupée de cire, Poupée de son.
(I know i'm not an arcade fire fan, but its a good cover)
